Turner Broadcasting System’s 127,000 square-foot post-production/studio facility includes three studios, a four story technical tower and post-production unit and a 6,000 ton expansion capacity central plant. The facility consolidates the post-production/studio work for Turner Entertainment Networks, along with Turner Sports and World Championship Wrestling, and the Cartoon Network servicing the U.S., Europe and South America. An 11,500 square foot loading/shipping facility and central plant provides support services on site. This project consisted of two buildings, the 1020 Building and the Central Plant Building. The 1020 Building is four stories tall and houses the studios, offices and penthouse. The Central Plan Building includes the chillers, pumps and cooling towers. The state-of-the-art facility includes a music recording studio that is very sound sensitive. The sound requirements (NC15) are some of the most stringent ever attempted outside a lab environment, making it one of the quietest studios anywhere.Because of the low velocity of air, very large duct was installed with extra care given to vibration isolation since no metals can touch. The facility has plaque ceilings which require acoustical caulk around the duct work. The duct consists of 4” and 6” liners. There are ten custom built air conditioning units in the Penthouse Production Building. In addition, the facility required installation of two 1,000 ton chillers, the relocating of a 450-ton chiller, six cooling towers and a fuel oil tank. The design assist and fast-track requirements of this project posed a real challenge for Ivey Mechanical Company. Eighty percent of the mechanical scope of the project had to be installed in four months. This goal was met with the assistance of Ivey swing crews and sheetmetal and piping shops.
