The West Edens Link dormitory is a 160,000 square foot, 340 bed gothic style dormitory. The complex contains an all night diner, coffee house, and natural landscaping to include an outdoor amphitheatre.

Ivey's contract included installing the plumbing and HVAC for this four-story 269,000 square foot facility. Because the facility is a laboratory, the duct system must supply and exhaust the correct volume of air to the various rooms to ensure proper room presurization. The ductwork in the building starts int he penthouses and feed sdown through the four floors through a centrally located duct chase, where it branches off and spans the floors. Plumbing for the project included underground waste, domestic water, lab water, lab waste, decorate fountain, storm drainage, and specialty gas. The construction of this project provided jobs for around 80 Alabama residents and 40 jobs through subcontractors.

Owner: Cumberland County School System - Fayetteville, North Carolina / Contract Amount: $3,298,320

The installation of this HVAC project included 800-tons cooling and 71 air-handling units. Ivey co-workers completed 44,000 man-hours without a recordable accident on this 276,000-square foot educational facility. The Fayetteville shop fabricated approximately 200,000-pounds of sheet metal, while the Kosciusko fabrication facility provided the piping for the two mechanical rooms.

The Kilgo Quadrangle renovation at Duke University involved the 100% renovation of a 1920 era Gothic structure to add air conditioning, new bath facilities, new lighting, new commons areas, and all new architectural finishes. The work was performed in a 12 week period to allow students to return for the 2002 Fall Semester.

Ivey Mechanical Company upgraded the campus steam, chilled water, storm sewer, domestic water, and sanitary sewer and telecommunications systems; expanded the direct buried piping and telecommunications conduit systems; and modified primary and secondary pumping systems. The existing chillers were modified from single-pass to two-pass machines. Existing chiller plant piping was modified to primary/secondary pumping systems. The existing campus energy management system was expanded for the new primary and secondary chilled water pumping. The storm sewer system was upgraded with elliptical reinforced concrete piping up to 108” by 68”. Miscellaneous sanitary sewer and domestic water system revisions included expansion of the existing domestic water system and a new supply from the public utility off campus.

Ivey’s renovation contract on a building that had been condemned, involved adding heating and cooling, while maintaining its historical aspects. None of the ductwork could be in the chapel area. It was all run underneath the floor in an area that was a mud slab. The chilled water and heating water system has a pre-treatment unit which supplies outside air to all of the other air units in order to control humidity. A 30 horsepower boiler and 40 tons of cooling equipment were installed to service the 7,500 square foot chapel and 3,000 square-foot conference area. Because space was crucial, a great deal of coordination was required to allow for all of the trades involved to complete their work. Ivey completed 5,747 man-hours with no lost-time accidents recorded.
